Gerd Kanter växjö1

Växjö, Sweden - Gerd Kanter, the World and Olympic Discus Throw champion from Estonia, launched the farthest ever indoor discus throw, reaching 69.51m at the World Record Indoor Challenge in Växjö, Sweden.
Kanter's best effor came in the second round of a solid series in which five of his six throws surpassed the previous world best of 66.20m set by East German Wolfgang Schmidt in Berlin in 1980. Opening with a 65.25m throw, he followed up with a 68.20m in the third round and again threw beyond 69m with a 69.01 toss in round four.

Dutchman Erik Cadée was second with a 60.37m best, with Märt Israel of Estonia third (60.32).

The competition was organised by the Swedish Athletic Club IFK Växjö. Kanter's coach, Vésteinn Hafsteinsson, lives in Växjö and the pair regularly have training camps here.

In May in Salinas, California, Kanter will be aiming for Jürgen Schult's World record of 74.08m, a mark which will celebrate its 23rd anniversary in June.
